Nina Simone: “Why?” (the king of love is dead)

” [The] present program, presented to a capacity audience at Westbury, Long Island, on the evening following the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, is highlighted by a song written upon that day by Gene Taylor, Nina’s bass player. Why? (The King of Love Is Dead) has the immediacy of a headline, the poignancy of tears for a loved one and the relevance of a siren in the night.” -Nat Shapiro

so here’s, a couple samples of the new stuff made from old jam tape samples. the trick was finding little pieces without any singing, so they could chopped up into loops. you know how it is… :-\

these should be ’bout ready for some nice vocal sounds.

it’s been too long since i posted any music, so i thought i’d put up a little bit of the new stuff i’m workin on.

this first track is actually *old* - a cassette tape recording from the tip-top lounge in SF, 1998.

i’ve been goin’ back to a lot of these old recordings and making new stuff out of them… it’s a challenge, but it’s kinda fun.

it’s also kinda funny how at the time we were playing music we wanted it to sound like something you would sample from, and here i am, almost 10 years later doing just that.

(in part 2 i’ll post an example of a new song made from old jams)

OG funk force for bski

Alright, here it is for the whole world to see… the year is 1996, and i got my first “real” sampler from an old roommate: it was a RockN’PLay guitar pedal that could store one sample at a time, and the buttons had a .5 second delay b4 the recording started and stopped. The beats were made by recording and re-looping the samples from TAPE. The turnatable used was a jenkins BELT DRIVE turntable, and the “cuts” are transformer cuts off an old gemini scratchmaster mixer.
Noah D and B-Ski on the mic, having fun in the Berkeley Hills one day…

Happy Deez Day, errybody.

from the Sydney Morning Herald: “How creepy is this? Many colour laser printers spew out a matrix of tiny dots - invisible to the naked eye - which identify the serial number of the printer and the date and time the printing took place.  A research team led by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which broke the code, says the dot code was embedded in a deal struck between the US Secret Service and selected printer manufacturers some years back…link
